HAKUIN, The Hidden Messages of Zen Art, at Bunkamura (THE MUSEUM), Tokyo

22nd December, 2012 - 24th February, 2013 | at Bunkamura (THE MUSEUM), Shibuya, Tokyo

Do you know Ekaku Hakuin (1685–1768)? He was a Zen monk in the Edo period recognized as the restorer of the Rinzai school of Buddhism, who also left ten thousand Zen paintings and calligraphies that are truly fascinating. These works, used by Hakuin to educate the public during his lifetime, are highly regarded by some researchers and collectors, although he is not generally considered to be famous in the world of art.

Since many of Hakuin's works are owned by Buddhist temples and individuals, there have been few opportunities for the general public to appreciate his works. In this exhibition, approximately 100 pieces, mainly large-scale works, will be gathered together from around the country. We hope the message that Hakuin wanted to spread through his Zen paintings and calligraphies will be delivered to people today’s world, as he transcends time and space with his impressive daruma, humorous hotei, merciful kannon images, and bold calligraphies.

Osaka Hikari-Renaissance 2012, an illuminated walk along event

Osaka Hikari-Renaissance 2012, an illuminated walk along event

14th - 25th December, 2012 | Nakanoshima & Midousuji Area, Osaka

Once again, this year Osaka will be presenting a sparkling winter.
"Osaka Hikari-Renaissance" first opened in Nakanoshima, a symbol of the port city of Osaka. The winter night illumination has since become known as a distinguishing feature of the season in Osaka, and is now approaching its 10th year.
Last year it was visited by 3,290,000 people, who came to see the heart-warming lights softly twinkling along the river and the city.
Last year also marked the third year of the lights decorating Osaka’s main street, known as "Midosuji Illumination," stretching 1.9 km, the longest illumination display in Japan. The likes of this scenery cannot be found anywhere else in the world, and many people are attracted to come see the beautiful city of lights.
Starting this year, the two displays will be combined, and with the common goal of broadcasting Osaka’s good cheer through the lights in the Nakanoshima and Midosuji areas, we are spreading the word throughout the country and abroad.
Come experience the bustling activity of Osaka for yourself, and let it enchant you with another expression at night, when it transforms into a city of water and lights.

Art Will Thrill You! : The Essence of Modern Japanese Art

Art Will Thrill You! : The Essence of Modern Japanese Art

16th October, 2012 - 14th January, 2013 | at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) was dedicated on December 1, 1952. Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the MOMAT, this exhibition will use all the floors of the museum’s main building to get to the heart of modern Japanese art. The title Art Will Thrill You! contains our belief in the moment when we have a valuable encounter with a work of art, an experience that everyone has chances to enjoy. These words represent the thrill that is the starting point for experiencing the bodily sensation of art, being deeply impressed, and thinking intellectually.

31th December, 2012 | Yasaka-jinja Shrine, Kyoto

A traditional New Year's Eve ritual of Kyoto praying for sound health in the New Year
Okera-Mairi is the name for the visits made to the Okera Matsuri festival from late at night on New Year's Eve to New Year's Day. This ritual is held at Yasaka-jinja Shrine, which is designated as an important cultural property of Kyoto. Okera refers to the medicinal herb Atractylis ovata, which is believed to cast away the evil energy of the past year, and to bless us with longevity. At Yasaka-jinja Shrine on New Year's Eve, kagaribi watch fires are lit by setting fire to the medicinal herb's roots and toro lanterns placed in 2 different places in the shrine precincts are lit by this fire.

17th - 19th December, 2012 | Asakusa, Tokyo

A lively fair full of Edo sentiments, brightly coloring downtown Tokyo at the year-end Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa is one of the most famous sightseeing spots in Tokyo. The Hagoita-Ichi (Battledore Fair) is an annual fair held in its precincts at the end of the year. Near the Hondo or main hall of Senso-ji Temple, some 50 open-air stalls selling hagoita (battledores), shuttlecocks, kites and other New Year decorations stand huddled together, and numerous people gather here from all over the country. This is a traditional fair dating back to the Edo Period, but it was apparently only after World War II that the name Hagoita-Ichi became popular.
