Welcome to the Jungle [contemporary art of Southeast Asia], at Yokohama Museum of Art, Kanagawa

Welcome to the Jungle [contemporary art of Southeast Asia], at Yokohama Museum of Art, Kanagawa

13th April - 16th June, 2013 | at Yokohama Museum of Art, Kanagawa
"Welcome to the Jungle" introduces the contemporary art of Southeast Asia since 1999 showcasing 28 works (sculpture, painting, video, photography, and others) by 25 artists from 8 countries: Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia.

The exhibition includes the artworks that have never been shown in Japan beside Roberto Feleo’s hybrid altarpiece inspired by a historical incident in which pagan gods and Christian saints are juxtaposed together; Chang Yoong Chia’s pictorial mother-son story depicted on ceramic spoons; and Zai Kuning’s video that focuses on the sea nomads whose traditional lifestyle is rarely seen today. It is said that the word ‘jungle’ is derived from the Sanskrit ‘jāngala’ meaning ‘wild, uncultivated ground.’
While the jungle is rapidly replaced by the cities, Southeast Asian contemporary art is brimming with heat like a jungle more than ever.
We hope you enjoy this exhibition surfing the heat wave from Southeast Asia where diverse peoples, cultures and values coexist. The exhibition is organized and presented by Yokohama Museum of Art and Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, in partnership with Singapore Art Museum.

Grand Exhibition of Sacred Treasures from Shinto Shrines, at Tokyo National Museum, Ueno, Taito, Tokyo

Grand Exhibition of Sacred Treasures from Shinto Shrines, at Tokyo National Museum, Ueno, Taito, Tokyo

9th April - 2nd June, 2013 | at Tokyo National Museum, Ueno, Taito, Tokyo

From ancient times, the Japanese people have respected nature and appreciated its power that transcends human knowledge.
People believed that gods resided in natural creations such as mountains, rocks, and trees. Shrines that were built to worship the gods housed statues representing deities and their accompanying divine treasures.
These statues and treasures have been carefully preserved at Shinto shrines, places revered as sacred. This exhibition, on the occasion of the 62nd grand relocation of the Ise Jingu shrine, will be held with the full cooperation of Jinja Honcho (Association of Shinto Shrines) and shrines across Japan, presenting a rare opportunity for a comprehensive view of treasures and cultural heritage related to Shinto shrines and deities.

6th April - 6th June, 2013 | at Yamatane Museum of Arts, Hiroo, Shibuya, Tokyo

Spring - when birds sing and flowers bloom in glorious color - truly a time of delight for the five senses. This spring we fill the museum with flowers in the Special Exhibition A Profusion of Flowers ― The Language of Flowers and the Encyclopedia of Flowers.
The Japanese have long been interested in seasonal plants and flowers and have sought to recreate them in visual form. They have celebrated the beauty of flowers and at times enjoyed growing them, and over the centuries, countless depictions of flowers have been created.

Yearning for the Pure Land Paradise: The Faith and History of Taimadera Temple, at Nara National Museum

Yearning for the Pure Land Paradise: The Faith and History of Taimadera Temple, at Nara National Museum

6th April - 2nd June, 2013 | at Nara National Museum

Taimadera, a Buddhist temple situated at the eastern foot of the mountain Nijōzan (Katsuragi City in Nara Prefecture), is famed for the Woven Taima Mandara, the temple’s principal worship object that depicts the magnificence of the Pure Land paradise, and the legend of Chūjō-hime, a young noblewoman of the Nara period whose piety was responsible for the creation of the mandara during the Nara period and who was thus reborn in paradise.
Every year in May, the splendid Neri-kuyō ritual (formally called Shōju raigō neri kuyō-e shiki) is held to reenact the arrival of the Buddha Amida and a host of bodhisattvas to welcome Chūjō-hime to paradise. The year 2012 marked the 1400th anniversary of the founding of the Manhōzō-in, the temple thought to have been the precursor of Taimadera, and 2013 is the 1250th year since Chūjō-hime’s faith was responsible for the weaving of the Taima Mandara in 763.
This exhibition, which celebrates these landmark anniversaries, is the first Taimadera exhibition where visitors can encounter the Woven Taima Mandara, a National Treasure, along with other temple treasures and related objects in a single location and also experience the appeal of the history and profound faith of Taimadera.

Sanno Matsuri (Takayama festival) at Hie Jinja Shrine, Takayama City, Gifu Pref.

14th - 15th April, 2013 | at Hie Jinja Shrine, Takayama City, Gifu Pref.

Sanno Matsuri is a festival at Hie Jinja Shrine in Takayama that features gorgeous floats carried on the shoulders of floatbearers.
Symbolizing the wish of farmers for a good harvest, the first day of the festival begins when the floats are taken from the storehouses and prepared for the procession.

After a Shinto ceremony at Hie Jinja Shrine, the wooden floats, some hundreds of year old, are paraded through the streets.
In the evening the procession continues with floats adorned with lanterns. Many people dress in Edo period costumes.
On the second day, marionettes shows ate performed on three of the 12 floats.

Kanamara Matsuri (Festival of the Steel Phallus) at Kanayama shrine, Kawasaki City

Kanamara Matsuri (Festival of the Steel Phallus) at Kanayama shrine, Kawasaki City

7th April, 2013 | at the Kanayama shrine, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Pref.

The Shinto Kanamara Matsuri (かなまら祭り "Festival of the Steel Phallus") is held each spring at the Kanayama shrine (金山神社) in Kawasaki, Japan.
The exact dates vary: the main festivities fall on the first Sunday in April.
The penis, as the central theme of the event, is reflected in illustrations, candy, carved vegetables, decorations, and a mikoshi parade.
The Kanamara Matsuri is centered around a local penis-venerating shrine once popular among prostitutes who wished to pray for protection from sexually transmitted diseases. It is said that there are also divine protections for business prosperity and for the clan's prosperity; and for easy delivery, marriage, and married-couple harmony.
There is also a legend of a sharp-toothed demon (vagina dentata) that hid inside the vagina of a young woman and castrated two young men on their wedding nights. As a result, the young woman sought help from a blacksmith, who fashioned an iron phallus to break the demon's teeth, which lead to the enshrinement of the item.
Today, the festival has become something of a tourist attraction and is used to raise money for HIV research. [From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia]
