Gozan Okiribi (Daimon-ji Yaki - enormous bonfires) in Kyoto

16th August, 2013 | in Kyoto Daimon-ji Yaki in Kyoto features enormous bonfires lit on five mountains in the form of five Chinese characters and shapes. The Chinese character for dai (“large”) measures 230 by 510 feet. The other characters are Myo and Ho , which together form “the marvelous law of Buddha,” Torii (a Shinto Gate) and Funagata (the shape of a ship). The fires are lit at 8:00pm and the best place to see them is from the banks of the Kamogawa River. The rite is performed to pay respects to the souls if ancestors and guide them their trip back to the other world. The origins of the rite is unknown. It may date back to A.D. 815 when a monk started a bonfire to dispel the plague.

Uwajima Bullfighting Convention, Uwajima City, Ehime Pref.

14th August, 2013 | Uwajima City, Ehime Pref.
There is oral communication that the fishermen of Fukuura rescued the Netherlands ship which was drifting about Uwakai about the origin of bullfighting in the second half of the 17th century, and two cows presented as the greeting started by having fought by chance, the angle of a cow is automatically compared in a field from a farmer building the strong Japanese beef for farming at the Kamakura period, and there is also an opinion of having made this into amusement. If bullfighting carries out from it being the spontaneous thing to depend on the combative instinct of a cow, you should think that the origin started with introduction of the cow for farming.

サイトウ・キネン・フェスティバル松本(長野県)

"The SAITO KINEN ORCHESTRA is my invaluable treasure, entrusted to me by the late Mr. Saito. It is no exaggeration to say that Mr.Saito made me what I am by sowing the seeds of western music in the Japanese soil and nurturing their growth. I am quite sure that all the members of the orchestra feel the same way and this concerted thought of each member makes up the Saito Kinen Orchestra. We thought that it was our mission to pass the will of our special mentor to future generations, in our own way. So, it was decided that we would hold the music festival in Japan, and that is how the SAITO KINEN FESTIVAL MATSUMOTO came into being." That was Seiji Ozawa's greeting in the first program in 1992.
In September of 1992, the Saito Kinen Festival was born in the beautiful natural surroundings of Japan Alps Matsumoto, with Seiji Ozawa and the Saito Kinen Orchestra as the formal nucleus and the orchestra's concerts and operas serving as twin pillars.
The SAITO KINEN ORCHESTRA was founded in September of 1984, when Hideo Saito's former students came from around the world to organize a special concert series to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Hideo Saito's death. After this series of concerts, the Saito Kinen Orchestra received invitations from around the world, and as a result of these tours it was acclaimed as being of the highest caliber.
Based on the reaction in Europe, the birth place of western classical music, there developed a dream until now unimaginable --"Japanese people one day transmitting western music back to its European homeland."
An annual summer festival was a natural out growth of this unique creation, to be known as the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto.
Seiji Ozawa
Director

Shanshan Matsuri (Umbrella Dance Festival) in Tottori Pref.

Shanshan Matsuri (Umbrella Dance Festival) in Tottori Pref.

10th - 15th August, 2013 | in Tottori Pref.
The Shan-Shan Festival is the largest festival in Tottori. For its main attraction, about 4,000 participants perform the dance. The origin is said to be a ritual rain-making dance carried on for centuries. The bells attached to the umbrellas make the sound of "shan-shan," so the dance was named the Shan-Shan Umbrella Dance.
