Uwajima Bullfighting Convention, Uwajima City, Ehime Pref.

27th October, 2013 | Uwajima City, Ehime Pref.

There is oral communication that the fishermen of Fukuura rescued the Netherlands ship which was drifting about Uwakai about the origin of bullfighting in the second half of the 17th century, and two cows presented as the greeting started by having fought by chance, the angle of a cow is automatically compared in a field from a farmer building the strong Japanese beef for farming at the Kamakura period, and there is also an opinion of having made this into amusement.
If bullfighting carries out from it being the spontaneous thing to depend on the combative instinct of a cow, you should think that the origin started with introduction of the cow for farming.

Kazuizawa Resorts Marathon

October 27, 2013 | Karuizawa, Nagano
Karuizawa is an upmarket mountain resort at the foot of the active volcano Mount Asama in Nagano Prefecture. It was first "discovered" and promoted as a mountain resort by Western residents of Japan in the late 1800s.
Nowadays, many wealthy urbanites own a second home in Karuizawa. Located at an altitude of roughly 1000 meters, the mountain resort provides a pleasant escape from the summer heat. Thanks to the Nagano Shinkansen (opened in 1998), it now takes little more than an hour to reach Karuizawa from central Tokyo.
Various outdoor activities, such as tennis, hiking, cycling, golfing in summer and skiing and skating in winter can be enjoyed in Karuizawa, and there are ample of shopping opportunities. Karuizawa is located along Japan's Romantic Road.

Kiba no kakunori (Kiba square log rolling) | 19th & 20th October, 2013 | Kiba, Tokyo

The Kiba area of Koto-ku derives its name from the once prolific lumberyards and warehouses. (Kiba is literally “lumberyard.”) Kiba no kakunori, or square log rolling, developed as a folk art from this unique background.

It sprang from the process of assembling rafts for transport, in which the lumberyard workers maneuver thick, massive logs with only a single fire hook.
Each year, as part of its residents’ festival, Koto-ku organizes this square log rolling at a pond in Kiba Park to pass down the origin of the name and the traditional culture of the area.
Why not join the event and witness the skillful Kiba raftsmen roll and ride the square logs floating in the water?

Niihama Taiko Drum Festival, Ehime

Niihama Taiko Drum Festival, Ehime

This dramatic festival is one of the major autumn festivals in Ehime prefecture.

Centered on the three days from October 16 to 18, over fifty lavish taiko drum floats decorated with gold and silver tassels are paraded around the city on the backs of 150 men each.
An exciting event during the festival is when the floats compete in a "kaki kurabe" where groups compete to see which group can lift their float for the longest amount of time.

Kenka (battles) Festival at Himeji City, Hyogo Pref.

Kenka (battles) Festival at Himeji City, Hyogo Pref.

14th - 15th October, 2013 | at Himeji City, Hyogo Pref.

Kenka Festival at Himeji City near Kobe features battles in which men carrying shrines slam their shrines into each other and battle one another, while pom-pom carrying, and stick pounding supporters egg them on, in effort to be the first to climb the Matsubara Hachiman Shrine.
The festival dates back to 1471 when a local ruler donated 200 bags of rice to help rebuild a shrine which had been burned down in a battle.
Floats were used to carry the rice to the top of a local sacred mountain. In the late 16th century the shrine was destroyed again, this time by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as an act of revenge against local people for supporting a rival war lord.
