Koji Kakinuma – Exploring Calligraphy at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Pref.

Koji Kakinuma – Exploring Calligraphy at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Pref.

23rd November, 2013 - 2nd March, 2014 | Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Pref.

Calligrapher Koji Kakinuma—born in 1970, lives and works in Tokyo. At five years old he took up the brush, first under father, Suiryu Kakinuma, and later Yukei Teshima and Ichijo Uematsu. Asking "Is Shodo art? Am I an artist?" Kakinuma has continually pushed the boundaries of Shodo, the Japanese art of calligraphy.
Kakinuma brings to Shodo a contemporary vision grounded in tradition. He probes the principle of calligraphy in an endeavor to see calligraphy as a contemporary art form. "Inhale, exhale—use the brush freely!" is the figure of calligraphy he aspires to.
Kakinuma’s expressive style takes many forms. "Rinsho" (brushing after a model) is a platform for dialogue with master calligraphers and people of the ancient past. "Encounters"—an offshoot of Rinsho—are his interpretations of others’ words in the Kakinuma style. His "super-large-scale works" are pictorial investigations using charcoal ink. Then, there is "performance," where he shares the creative process with an audience, "trancework"—countless repetitions of simple, powerful phrases, and "installations" that give temporal and spatial development to calligraphy on grand scale.
The calligraphy of Koji Kakinuma is thus an "art of today" that draws from calligraphy, contemporary art, and sub-culture. It is calligraphy of hope that looks to tomorrow. It is calligraphy of possibility, free and open to the future. This exhibition will present the world of Koji Kakinuma through some 700 of his foremost works.

Jikken Kobo - Experimental Workshop at Setagaya Art Museum, Tokyo

23rd November, 2013 - 26th january, 2014 | Setagaya Art Museum, Tokyo

The Experimental Workshop was a collective of young avant-garde artists working in a variety of genres. It included visual artists Shozo Kitadai, Katsuhiro Yamaguchi, and Tetsuro Komai, photographer Kiyoji Otsuji, musicians Toru Takemitsu, Joji Yuasa, Kazuo Fukushima, Hiroyoshi Suzuki, and Takahiro Sonoda, lighting artist Naoji Imai, technician Hideo Yamazaki, and poet Kuniharu Akiyama.
Organized in 1951, this group was ahead of its time even by international standards. Especially remarkable was its advocacy of a total art that included visual art, music, and the performing arts.

This is the first exhibition in a public museum to examine the overall activities of the Experimental Workshop, presenting some 450 items, including painting, sculpture, photography, film and video, musical scores, and programs.

In commemoration of the completion of the Heisei renovations to the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin - Celestial Dance: The Art of Hiten, at SUNTORY Museum of Art, Tokyo Midtown, Akasaka, Tokyo

23rd November, 2013 - 13th january, 2014 | at SUNTORY Museum of Art, Tokyo Midtown, Akasaka, Tokyo

Buddhist angels that fly and dance in the sky are known as "hiten," and, from India to Japan, their elegant and magnificent forms have delighted people for centuries. In this exhibition, we examine the forms of hiten as they have been manifested in sculpture, painting and craft across wide geographical and historical ranges.

The exhibition features a special display of sculptures depicting Bodhisattva Riding Clouds from the Phoenix Hall of the Byodoin Temple, ahead of the hall's unveiling after extensive renovations. Also on display is Byodoin's sculpture of hiten attached to the halo of Amidanyorai - the first time it has ever been shown outside of the temple grounds. The Bodhisattva, Amidanyorai and the Phoenix Hall itself are all designated National Treasures. This will be an extremely rare opportunity to see these famous pieces close-up.

1st November, 2013 - 2nd March, 2014 | at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts nad Media
In November 2013, the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM] celebrates ten years of serving as a base for the creation and promotion of new relationships between art and media around the core elements of art, media and body expression, with an eye toward both present and future generations.

While looking back at the Center’s past endeavors, the “Yamaguchi Art and Environment for Tomorrow / YCAM 10th Anniversary” is carried out at locations across Yamaguchi in close connection with the local people, in a variety of programs designed to renew our understanding of “environments” as concepts that encompass notions of natural and informational environments.

Exchange - Planting the seed - Artist in Residence at Aomori Contemporary Art Centre (ACAC), Aomori Public University

26th October - 15th December, 2013 | Aomori Contemporary Art Centre (ACAC), Aomori Public University

The Aomori Contemporary Art Centre (ACAC) has decided the theme for the 2013 Artist in Residence program: "Exchange―Planting the seed." The 'Artist-in-Residence' (AIR) program expects artists to have firsthand experiences that would otherwise be impossible during short stays such as sightseeing and exhibitions.
The experiences had by living and working at the ACAC for a designated period of time are meant to contribute to the development and deepening of AIR artists' projects. Conversely, AIR is also expected to be a means of contact with novel experiences and new ways of thinking through the artists and their work.
Much more than personal interaction and cultural exchange, this means contact with something deeper, which is why we expect that seeds of coming creations will be planted in each other to bud and bloom somewhere, someday.

These could be called chance encounters filled with opportunity to reconsider and relativize each other's values and what is taken to be common sense. The premise of AIR is based on interaction but extends beyond it; it develops around the theme of creative exchange by thinking again about what we can do through recognition and what lies beyond the interactions we have.

Exhibition "Toward a DESIGN MUSEUM JAPAN" at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Tokyo Midtown, Akasaka, Tokyo

Exhibition "Toward a DESIGN MUSEUM JAPAN" at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Tokyo Midtown, Akasaka, Tokyo

25th October, 2013 - 9th February, 2014 | 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Tokyo Midtown, Akasaka, Tokyo

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT holds the "Toward a DESIGN MUSEUM JAPAN" exhibition. Design impacts every corner of our lives; it brings joy to everyday life but it also leads the way to industrial growth and affluence. Design museums are not just an archive that passes on this remarkable design culture to following generations but it is bound to become an essential key when thinking to our lives from here into the future.

Since opening in 2007, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT has held 23 exhibitions starting from the "Tadao Ando Construction Site 2006 'A Hard-Fought Process'" and "Chocolate" exhibitions. Along with these exhibitions, we have dedicated itself to talk, workshops, and other educational programs. Our journey to present has been supported by our determination to create a true design museum in Japan.
This exhibition will contemplate the roles expected of 21st century design museums.

This will be examined through new outlooks based on time; past, present, and future accompanied by introduction to past 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT exhibitions as examples. We hope that this exhibition will become an opportunity for many to reflect upon their lives, culture, and society and furthermore about the possibilities of design.

BUNNY SMASH - design to touch the world, at MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART TOKYO, Kiba Park, Tokyo

BUNNY SMASH - design to touch the world, at MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART TOKYO, Kiba Park, Tokyo

3rd October, 2013 - 19th january, 2014 | at MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART TOKYO, Kiba Park, Tokyo

As society has become increasingly complex since entering the 21st century, design has also been undergoing dramatic changes. Today, the sort of design that is taking on increasing importance is one that has the capacity to change people's perception of society, as opposed to one that contributes to the constant stream of consumer products pursuing “newness.”
This exhibition focuses on practices in design by a total of twenty one designers, artists and architects, both domestic and foreign, who address various elements and phenomena pertaining to today's highly advanced information society in the form of tangible design. Crossing over genres, their practices interpret the present landscape of the world we live in through unique measures.

At times, through unexpected ideas, they give us the opportunity to see and feel the world in ways which we would not otherwise. By providing a comprehensive physical experience, as opposed to one that depends solely on the sense of vision, the exhibition aims to question anew existing bodies of knowledge and the ways in which information is disseminated in society, while also providing an entry point for viewers to think about ways in which they can engage with the world as active participants.

LIVING & DESIGN 2013 at Grand Cube Osaka

LIVING & DESIGN 2013 at Grand Cube Osaka

27th - 29th November, 2013 | at Grand Cube Osaka

Launched in 2009, Living & Design is an annual international trade fair with the theme of “living and living-space renovation.”
Following a move to Grand Cube Osaka, a hub of trade shops and showrooms, Living & Design gained a significantly enhanced profile in its 2012 release. In its fourth edition last year, there were more than 100 companies exhibiting, including 20 from overseas (America, Italy, Canada, Thailand, Denmark, France and Belgium) and the event was the talk of the town for three action-packed days.
Living & Design 2012 saw its highest satisfaction rate compared to previous years at 82%. In addition to the number of visitors and the exhibition scale, what exhibitors prize most about Living & Design is its cost effectiveness.
The diversity and opportunities at Living & Design are a proven path to business success. This year’s fair, Living & Design 2013, will provide even greater coverage than previous years, offering exciting opportunities for new business contacts. The call for exhibitors was announced on March 4 this year at Grand Cube Osaka where the fair will take place. 90 prospective exhibitors participated in a briefing session, with over 70 percent considering participating in the fair for the first time. On behalf of the organizer, Mr. Toshiyuki Kita, executive producer, Yoshihiko Mamiya, creative director, and Reiko Kawakami, coordinator of LIVING & DESIGN, attended. They reported on the last fair and explained the booths, site layout and the effect for exhibitors.
LIVING & DESIGN is highly reputed for its commercial potential and unique style, including the circle of collaboration with a wide range of living-space and interior exhibitors, and the compact venue arranged as a living space, adding to the environment for business opportunities. Living & Design 2013 will also offer exhibitors who lack a store or showroom of their own in Osaka a place to exhibit and sell their products directly to general consumers during the trade fair period, using space in department stores, partners of Living & Design in Osaka.
As people grow and redefine what is important in their lives, the lifestyles they choose will also continue to change and diversify on into the future.
Together with exhibitors and visitors, LIVING & DESIGN 2013 is taking its first step towards a goal of improving lifestyles and activating industry by proposing ways to renovate one’s home and way of living with the “power of design (new ideas and technologies).” “What starts with a small idea can lead to a new way of life.” LIVING & DESIGN 2013 will bring the resources for changing how we think about lifestyle.
