The Power of Images: The National Museum of Ethnology Collection at The National Art Center, Roppongi, Tokyo

19th February - 9th June, 2014 | The National Art Center, Roppongi, Tokyo

Human history is a history of images. Images preceded writing and they are believed to have served as a source for words.
The act of visualizing the world by adding shape and color to its essence and structure is a fundamental part of human nature.

Are the creation and appreciation of images universal to all people? Taking this magnificent question as its theme, this exhibition introduces an array of formed objects that were created in a variety of regions throughout the world.
The displays will consist of outstanding articles specially selected from the huge collection of the National Museum of Ethnology, which has amassed materials from a host of different countries.

A collaborative project between the museum and the National Art Center, Tokyo, the exhibition will focus on shared forms, effects, and functions of images rather than dividing them according to geographical region or historical period.

This will also provide us with an opportunity to reassess our stereotypes of formed objects. In the expansive gallery of the National Art Center, Tokyo, everything from the masks and religious idols that you might expect to see at the National Museum of Ethnology to works by currently active artists will be presented side-by-side, transcending the boundary between an institution made for art and one designed for anthropology.

Visitors will have an opportunity to experience the breathtaking vitality of objects used in religious rites, the profound nature of hybrid articles that arose out of cultural exchange, and the dynamism of images that have merged with our globalized contemporary society.
In this way, we hope that you will be able to savor the power of images as a universal part of human culture.

In February 2014 ginza graphic gallery (ggg) will mount an exhibition titled “Putting Finger: Masahiko Sato + Tatsuya Saito.”

In recent years these two artists have been probing new relationships between graphic design and fingers, i.e. the human body, and in the process they have given birth to new modes of expression, new representations and new possibilities.
In the forthcoming exhibition at ggg, visitors will be able to experience these new sensations by placing their fingers, literally, on a variety of Sato and Saito’s graphics.

Your Portrait: A Tetsumi Kudo Retrospective at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo

4th February - 30th March, 2014 | The National Museum of Modern Art, Chiyoda, Tokyo

Your Portrait was one of Tetsumi Kudo's favorite and most frequently used titles.
While the word "you" indicated the person looking at the work, suggesting that we are all constrained by a variety of established values and conventions, it also referred to Kudo himself as the work's first viewer.
Further, it was intended as a portrait of the human race as the unavoidable victim of radioactive contamination.

Yamaga Lantern Festival at Omiya Shrine, Yamaga City, Kumamoto Pref.

Every weekend in February, 2014 | at Omiya Shrine, Yamaga City, Kumamoto Pref.

Women with lit paper lanterns on their heads and dressed in cherry colored kimonos dance elegantly in the Yamaga Lantern Festival. It is a festival led by women, which is uncommon in Kyushu. The festival derives from a traditional legend that says when the emperor visited Omiya Shrine a long time ago, a mist emerged, so the villagers welcomed him with torchlights.

The Yamaga Lantern, a traditional art craft that originated in the Muromachi period, is made without the use of wood or metal fittings. The Lantern somewhat resembles Japanese women, who look frail on the surface, but are strong deep down inside.

Dancing and praying for a rich harvest.A dance expressing farm work to signal the arrival of the northern spring.

Dancers called tayu, flute-players, drummers, players sounding bells known as kane and singers form groups of 10-30 members which parade through the city.

Every year, over 30 groups including children's groups wearing colorful costumes participate in this event.
This is a festival praying for a rich harvest, and in the old days the dancers used to carry farm tools called eburi when performing their dance. Enburi, the name of this festival, is believed to have derived from this eburi.

Saidai-ji Eyo Hadaka Matsuri, Okayama

16th February, 2014 | Saidai-ji, Okayama
A mysterious and exciting night festival. Almost fully-naked men compete for good luck charms.

One of the three most eccentric festivals of Japan.
Nine thousand men wearing only loincloths struggle fiercely with one another over a pair of lucky sacred sticks measuring 4 cm in diameter and 20 cm in length, thrown into the crowd by the priest from a window 4 m up.

Anyone who luckily gets hold of the shingi and thrusts them upright in a wooden measuring box known as a masu which is heaped with rice is called the lucky man, and is blessed with a year of happiness.
The other lucky items are bundles of willow strips, and although 100 of these are thrown into the crowd, it is not an easy task to catch them.

Yokote Kamakura Snow Festival, Akita

15th - 16th February, 2014 | Yokote, Akita
A fantastic world appearing on a snow country evening. Chatting with children in rooms made of snow.

A room made by carving out a mound of snow is called a kamakura. In Yokote City, more than 100 kamakura and countless miniature kamakura are made. The candle lights of these snow white kamakura produce a quiet, beautiful spectacle against the darkness.

This 400 year old festival is said to have its origins in the traditional event of returning New Year decorations to the gods by burning them, and also in the custom of children chasing away birds damaging crops. Inside the kamakura, an altar is set up to honor the water gods and to pray for plenty of clear water, while sake and rice cakes are offered to the gods.

Passers-by are invited by the children, in Akita dialect, to come inside the kamakura and drink some sweet fermented rice brew. Everyone has a good time chatting while eating rice cakes and sweets, which is the conventional way of spending time in kamakura.
On the other hand, numerous rows of tiny kamakura stand in the grounds of the Yokote Minami Primary School in the city, with the lights shining from within creating a very romantic scene.

Osaka Auto Messe 2014 at INTEX OSAKA, Suminoe, Osaka

14th - 16th February, 2014 | at INTEX OSAKA, Suminoe, Osaka

It is already known about Japan's largest auto show, Tokyo Auto Salon. But how many of you have heard of Osaka Auto Messe?
About a month after TAS each year, Japan's second largest car show happens just east of Tokyo in Japan's second largest city, Osaka.

Osaka Auto Messe 2014 at INTEX OSAKA, Suminoe, Osaka

OAM has been running annually for the last 17 years and lures in almost a quarter-million attendees each time. Although still not as big as TAS, some say OAM is more of a quality show than quantity. You won't see as many OE manufacturers here. Instead this is a more tuner-based show.
