The Scientific Eye and Visual Wonders in Edo at SUNTORY Museum of Art, Tokyo Midtown Galleria, Akasaka, Tokyo

The Scientific Eye and Visual Wonders in Edo at SUNTORY Museum of Art, Tokyo Midtown Galleria, Akasaka, Tokyo

29th March - 11th May, 2014 | Tokyo Midtown Galleria, Akasaka, Tokyo

During the latter half of the Edo period, microscopes, telescopes, and other optical devices imported from abroad overturned the conventional thinking about vision in Japan. Interest in images reflected in mirrors and shadow pictures soared, and artists created many works that focused on those intriguing visual effects. Knowledge of Western-style linear perspective and of bird’s-eye view images set off their own revolution in Edo painting.
This exhibition introduces the new visual culture that flourished in eighteenth and nineteenth century Japan through the work of Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Shiba Kokan, and other artists.

Light Up on Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto

14th - 23rd and 29th March - 13th April, 2014 | at Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto

Kiyomizudera (清水寺, literally "Pure Water Temple") is one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. It was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto, and derives its name from the fall's pure waters.
The temple was originally associated with the Hosso sect, one of the oldest schools within Japanese Buddhism, but formed its own Kita Hosso sect in 1965. In 1994, the temple was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.

Kiyomizudera is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 meters above the hillside below.
The stage affords visitors a nice view of the numerous cherry and maple trees below that erupt in a sea of color in spring and fall, as well as of the city of Kyoto in the distance.
The main hall, which together with the stage was built without the use of nails, houses the temple's primary object of worship, a small statue of the eleven faced, thousand armed Kannon.

Tokyo International Anime Fair is held at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center in Odiaba and Ariake, Tokyo. Describing the event Virginia Hefferman wrote in the New York Times: "The Death-Star-sized convention center that housed the fair—with its sprawling trade show, closed-door industry symposiums and awards ceremony—were decked with images of exuberant, candy-colored anime figures. As they gazed down on the hundred thousand or so fans who ambled among the booths, their googly baby eyes, seemed to monitor the proceedings."

Jigen-e (Gold Dragon Festival) at Asakusa-Kannon, Taito, Tokyo

18th March, 2014 | at Asakusa-Kannon, Taito, Tokyo

On March 18 in the year 628 (the 36th year of the reign of Empress Suiko), two fishermen brothers who were catching fish at the Sumida River found a small Buddhist statue.
They gave it to Haji no Nakatomo, who realized it was a statue of the bodhisattva Kannon. He enshrined this statue on a Japanese pagoda tree stump, entered the priesthood, turned his home into a temple, and became deeply religious.
This manifestation of the bodhisattva Kannon was the beginning of Sensoji Temple, which is celebrated by the Asakusa Kannon Jigen-e ritual.
Sensoji Temple originated from the honorific name "Kinryuzan" (Golden Dragon Mountain).

Higashiyama Hanatōro (flower & light road), Kyoto

The next Higashiyama Hanatoro will be held from March 14 to 23, 2014.

During the March Hanatoro the streets of Kyoto's historic Higashiyama District are lined by more than 2400 lanterns that stretch from Shorenin all the way to Kiyomizudera.
Nearly all of the popular temples and shrines in the district are illuminated and have extended opening hours.

The Hanabutai stage is set up in Kodaiji Temple Park where daily live music, dance and performances are held.
Additionally, performance areas in front of the large central weeping cherry tree (shidarezakura) in Maruyama Park and Kiyomizudera are set aside for street performances.

Many shops also have extended opening hours during Hanatoro, and in combination with the illumination events makes for a pleasant evening atmosphere which attracts many people to the area during a time of the day when it is usually rather deserted.

“shiseido art egg”; Madoka Furuhashi Exhibition, at Shiseido Gallery, Ginza, Tokyo

Madoka Furuhashi, 1983 Born in Nagano, 2012 MFA degree, Royal College of Art

7th - 30th March, 2014 | Shiseido Gallery, Ginza, Tokyo

Madoka Furuhashi began her career in architecture and since moving into art from there, she renders everyday objects into art in a way that investigates the sites and frameworks defining art. In her work using objects left in the house she resided in London, she arranged objects such as half-broken furniture and kitchen utensils left by past inhabitants along with photographs to rebuild these as an installation.
For this exhibition, her first solo show in Japan, she exhibits new works created from used everyday objects collected in Japan such as fish bowls and insect cages, as well as agricultural implements. She explores the stories that surround such objects, drawing forth their inherent power.
