Aoi Matsuri in Kyoto, the world's oldest festival

Aoi Matsuri in Kyoto, the world's oldest festival

15th May, 2014 | at the Kamigamojinja and Shimogamojinja shrines, Kyoto

Aoi Matsuri in Kyoto has been called the world's oldest festival.
Held at the Kamigamojinja and Shimogamojinja shrines, it features a procession with 600 or so men, women and children dressed in costumes like those worn by nobles and members of the Imperial court in the Heian Period (794-1185).
The men wear white or grey tunics with wedge shaped black hats and women wear bright orange kimonos.

Also featured in the procession are huge decorated carts pulled by oxen with orange-colored yokes and costumed riders on horseback that shoot arrows at three targets 100 meters apart while riding at a full gallop.
The festival gets its name from the aoi or hollyhock leaves carried by the participants.
The festival dates back to a time when Kyoto was often ravaged by floods and local people asked the gods for help.
When relief appeared the people showed their thanks by throwing a festival.
The central act of the festival is the offering of aoi leaves as a sign of respect to gods of Kamigamo and Shimogama shrines.

Prints in Blue: 26th Exhibition of Prints from the Tyler Graphics Archive Collection at CCGA (Center for Contemporary Graphic Art), Sukagawa-shi, Fukushima

1st March - 29th June, 2014 | Center for Contemporary Graphic Art, Sukagawa-shi, Fukushima

Blue, being the color of the sky and the sea, is a color we feel an especially close affinity with. In ancient times it had strong negative overtones, for in many regions blue was a symbol of death or ugliness. Eventually, however, it came to also symbolize concepts such as mystery and nobleness. Even today, blue has mixed connotations.
On one hand, as an adjective it may describe feelings of deep depression. On the other, blue is a popular color widely used to convey sensations of freshness and vibrancy.

In the world of art, in Christian paintings the Virgin Mary is typically depicted wearing blue, her symbolic color. In modern and later art also, blue is frequently used in impressive ways: for example, in the works created during Picasso's "Blue Period" or as Yves Klein's "International Klein Blue."

This exhibition, gleaned from CCGA's Tyler Graphics Archive Collection, will offer visitors a broad palette of "prints in blue" --works in blues of expressive diversity arising from their different themes and different production techniques.
Among them will be the geometric abstractions of Josef Albers, in "intellectual" blue; the color fields of Helen Frankenthaler, in highly "poetic" blue; and the swimming pool paintings of David Hockney, in richly "expressive" blue.
We hope the exhibition will provide visitors an opportunity to appreciate, more than ever, the wondrously attractive appeal of the color --and colors-- of blue.
