In the past, monk soldiers of the Kofuku-ji Temple participated in the festival.

However, because of the policy of separation between Shintoism and Buddhism in the Meiji era, the festival changed into one for the whole Nara.

The date changed to December 17.
On the festival day, Divine Spirit of Wakamiya is transferred to a small place called Otabisho, near the approach to Kasuga Grand Shrine.

In the daytime you can see a parade of people wearing clothes of entertainment and martial arts, and feudal lords as well.
At night you can see dedicatory entertainments such as Shinto music and dancing (Kagura), court dance and music (Bugaku), ritual music and dancing (Dengaku) and Seinoo until the Divine Spirit gets back to the shrine.

These entertainments are designated as important intangible folk cultural assets.

Koga Chouchin Saomomi Matsuri (Paper Lantern with long Banboo Stick), Ibaragi

Koga Chouchin Saomomi Matsuri (Paper Lantern with long Banboo Stick), Ibaragi

6th December, 2014 | at Koga JR Station, Koga City, Ibaragi Pref.

During the Chouchin Saomomi Festival (literally “Paper Lantern Bamboo Pole Festival”), groups from Koga city each hoist a lantern on top of a bamboo pole nearly 20m high and jostle to extinguish other groups’ lanterns.

The festival is believed to have originated in the Edo period in the Koga domain (present day Nogi in Tochigi Prefecture), where the Shinto priest of Nogi Shrine would ride around the seven villages that were part of the shrine’s territory on horseback, proudly bearing a Kamihoko spear, one of Nogi Shrine’s Goshintai (an object of worship believed to contain a deity).

When he returned to the shrine in the early morning on December 3, his welcoming party, who carried lanterns, would ward off the cold until the priest arrived by tussling with each other.

It is said that the original name of the festival was Okaeri, or ‘welcome back’.

Oshiroi Matsuri (Face Paint Festival) | December, Asakura-shi, Fukuoka

Oshiroi Matsuri (Face Paint Festival) | December, Asakura-shi, Fukuoka

2nd December, 2014 | Asakura-shi, Fukuoka

On the day of the Oshiroi Matsuri (Face Paint Festival), newly harvested rice is ground into powder and made into white face paint, which is then smeared on the faces of worshippers in an attempt to foretell whether they will have a bountiful or lean harvest.

These worshippers are not allowed to wash nor wipe the paint off their faces until they get home, and it is said that if they feed their livestock food with the face paint mixed into it, the animals will never get sick.
It is also said that if worshippers participate in the festival every year, their skin will become smooth and they will have a long life!

With a relaxed mood amid its silliness, the Oshiroi Matsuri is one of the more unique festivals throughout the whole of Japan.
