Light Up on Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto

Light Up on Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto

28th March - 12th April, 2015 | at Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto

Kiyomizudera (清水寺, literally "Pure Water Temple") is one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. It was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto, and derives its name from the fall's pure waters.
The temple was originally associated with the Hosso sect, one of the oldest schools within Japanese Buddhism, but formed its own Kita Hosso sect in 1965. In 1994, the temple was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.

Kiyomizudera is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 meters above the hillside below.
The stage affords visitors a nice view of the numerous cherry and maple trees below that erupt in a sea of color in spring and fall, as well as of the city of Kyoto in the distance.
The main hall, which together with the stage was built without the use of nails, houses the temple's primary object of worship, a small statue of the eleven faced, thousand armed Kannon.

Celebrating Two Contemporary Geniuses: Jakuchu and Buson, at SUNTORY Museum of Art, Akasaka, Tokyo

18th March - 10th May, 2015 | SUNTORY Museum of Art, Akasaka, Tokyo

Ito Jakuchu and Yosa Buson, two early modern giants of painting in Japan, were born in the same year, 1716. Jakuchu’s family were grocery wholesalers in Nishiki-Koji in Kyoto, but Jakuchu chose to devote himself to painting, working throughout his life to establish his own distinctive style. Buson was born in the village of Kema, in what is now Osaka.

After a period of roaming about, traveling to Edo, further north in the Kanto region, and elsewhere, he returned to Kyoto, where he achieved great success in both the haiku and literati painting worlds.
This exhibition, on the occasion of Jakuchu’s and Buson’s three hundredth birthdays, includes newly discovered work as well as their iconic masterpieces. It also presents work dating from the period when Jakuchu and Buson were in contact with each other.

Jigen-e (Gold Dragon Festival) at Asakusa-Kannon, Taito, Tokyo

18th March, 2015 | at Asakusa-Kannon, Taito, Tokyo

On March 18 in the year 628 (the 36th year of the reign of Empress Suiko), two fishermen brothers who were catching fish at the Sumida River found a small Buddhist statue.
They gave it to Haji no Nakatomo, who realized it was a statue of the bodhisattva Kannon.
He enshrined this statue on a Japanese pagoda tree stump, entered the priesthood, turned his home into a temple, and became deeply religious.

This manifestation of the bodhisattva Kannon was the beginning of Sensoji Temple, which is celebrated by the Asakusa Kannon Jigen-e ritual.
Sensoji Temple originated from the honorific name "Kinryuzan" (Golden Dragon Mountain).

Omizutori, a Water-Drawing Ritual, at Nigatsu-do Hall in Todaiji Temple, Nara

1st - 14th March, 2015 | Todaiji Temple, Nara

Omizutori is the commonly used name for Shunie, a series of events held annually from March 1 to 14 at Todaiji Temple.
This collection of Buddhist repentance rituals has been held every year for over 1250 years, making it the one of the oldest reoccurring Buddhist events in Japan.

Omizutori is performed at Nigatsudo Hall, a sub complex of Todaiji, which stands not far from the temple's main hall on the slope of a hill.
Nigatsudo literally means "second month hall", referring to the second month of the lunar calendar, when Omizutori has traditionally been held.
The second month of the lunar calendar roughly corresponds to March of the solar calendar.
