Tsukiji Shishi-Sai (festival at shrine) at Namiyoke Inari Jinja, Tsukiji, Tokyo

Tsukiji Shishi-Sai (festival at shrine) at Namiyoke Inari Jinja, Tsukiji, Tokyo

6th - 10th June, 2015 | at Namiyoke Inari Jinja, Tsukiji, Tokyo

Located in Tsukiji, Namiyoke Inari Shrine is known as a place to pray for protection from disasters and bad luck, business prosperity, and the safety of construction work.

When reclamation work at the coast in southeast Edo was in progress during the Edo period, embankments in the Tsukiji area were repeatedly washed away and had to be rebuilt numerous times, making the construction most difficult.
According to legend, however, ocean waves and winds calmed down after people found and started worshipping the sacred body of a deity that emerged on the ocean's surface.

When the reclamation was completed in 1659, people celebrated it by carrying floats that symbolize a dragon who controls clouds, a tiger who controls the wind, and the huge head of shishi lion whose roar caused the whole world to obey him. (*reference: GO TOKYO)

Tsuzawa Yotaka Andon Matsuri (float parade & battle), Oyabe City, Toyama Pref.

6th & 7th June, 2015 | Oyabe City, Toyama Pref.

This festival lantern costs well over a month's worth of hard work and late nights, mentions a 60-something woman who just befriended you.
It also took reams of crumpled washi, and swaths of clothing stained red with food dye, she informs.

The lanterns must be over five meters tall, and you're just now getting to wondering why they all have other multiple meters' worth of thick tree trunks jutting out from the bottom.

Taking a closer look at the other teams as you pass them by, you realize that each group's happi and hairstyles are a little different, the songs and chants they are shouting, the drumbeats they are playing, the dances they are performing, unique to each. (*reference: japantravel)

Shirone Takogassen (huge kite fighting festival) along the Nakanokuchi river bank in Shirone, Niigata Pref.

5th - 9th June, 2015 | along the Nakanokuchi river bank in Shirone, Niigata

Shirone Takogassen is a huge kite fighting festival that last for five days and is held along the Nakanokuchi river bank in Shirone, Niigata Prefecture.

Over 300 years old, it is said to be the world’s largest kite fight. About 300 kites take part.

They are made from bamboo and washi paper and can be as large as 23-x-17 feet and weigh as much as 50 kilograms.
Each kite has a unique design that has in some cases remained unchanged for three centuries.
Tsugaru kites are often decorated with well-known historical figures.
Many have ukiyoe-style pictures.
The rope is made at great expense from hemp.

Teams from Shirane compete against teams from nearby Akikatamaru village.
In a typical fight one kite from Shirone is raised on one side of the river and a second kite from Akikatamaru is raised on the other side of the river.
Teams of 30 to 50 men run along the river bank, pulling the kites towards one another.
The teams the severe the other’s line - usually in just a few minutes - is the winner.

Seven matches are held with seven groups from each town.
The number of battles won and the amount of time the kites stay aloft determines the overall winner.

Describing one fight Tatsuya Sakamoto wrote in the Daily Yomiuri:
“Giant Kites waged a dynamic air battle ... Their lines became entangled with one another high above the 80-meter-wide stream before plunging into the water.
Participants then yanked on the 130-meter-long lines with all their might in what quickly became a giant tug of war.”
