Kanda Curry Grand Prix 2015, at Ogawa Plaza in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward

31st October - 1st November, 2015 | Ogawa Plaza in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward
While it may not be the first thing that comes to mind when people think about Japanese food, curry is still a mainstay in Japan’s food scene as one of the nation’s most popular dishes.

Introduced to the country during the Meiji Period, the spicy Indian dish quickly became mainstream and was modified to suit the milder Japanese palate.

Kanda Curry Grand Prix will be held in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward with more than 20 participating vendors.
Visitors can taste a variety of Japanese and Indian curry dishes sold in stalls while listening to several musical acts performing on stage.

The two-day event will conclude with the awards ceremony announcing the winner of the 2015 Grand Prix. Everyone is welcomed to join — as long as they bring an empty stomach.

Companies now vie to get a Good Design Award stamp of approval on their brands to prove to customers that they are the best of the best.

The show has already named their “Good Design Best 100,” and will hand out special awards at the show. Some of the “Best 100” include Samsung’s Galaxy 6S and its curved screen, Narita Airport Terminal 3’s blue running track and Nike’s interactive LED basketball court.

There will also be workshops at the event to show future designers how to create the creative and engaging works possible, perhaps even garnering them a Good Design Award at a future event. (Miina Yamada)

Kyoto Imperial Palace Open for Public

Kyoto Imperial Palace Open for Public

Kyoto Gosho is an imperial palace located in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. The Kyoto Imperial Palace is the latest of the imperial palaces built at or near its site in the north-eastern part of the old capital of Heiankyo after the abandonment of the larger original Heian Palace that was located to the west of the current palace during the Heian Period.

The Palace lost much of its function at the time of the Meiji Restoration, when the capital functions were moved to Tokyo in 1869. However, the Taisho and Showa Emperors still had their coronation ceremonies at the palace.

RINPA: The Aesthetics of the Capital at Kyoto National Museum

RINPA: The Aesthetics of the Capital at Kyoto National Museum

10th October - 23rd November, 2015 | Kyoto National Museum

2015 marks the 400th anniversary of the origins of Rinpa and nearly 300 years since the death of its eponymous artist Ogata Kōrin.

Among the various anniversary celebrations taking place in Japan this year, the Kyoto National Museum's commemorative special exhibition is perhaps the ultimate presentation of this subject, tracing the transmission of the Rinpa aesthetic from its inception through the Edo period (1615–1868). Significantly, it is also the first major show of its kind to be held in the birthplace of Rinpa—the ancient capital of Kyoto.

Rinpa (alternatively spelled Rimpa) is a revivalist aesthetic style based on classical artistic and literary traditions.
Rinpa works are often characterized by subject matter taken from nature or classical Japanese literature; they frequently have a decorative sensibility and sometimes abstracted design elements and distinctive techniques.

Uwajima Bullfighting Convention, Uwajima City, Ehime Pref.

25th October, 2015 | Uwajima City, Ehime Pref.

There is oral communication that the fishermen of Fukuura rescued the Netherlands ship which was drifting about Uwakai about the origin of bullfighting in the second half of the 17th century, and two cows presented as the greeting started by having fought by chance, the angle of a cow is automatically compared in a field from a farmer building the strong Japanese beef for farming at the Kamakura period, and there is also an opinion of having made this into amusement. If bullfighting carries out from it being the spontaneous thing to depend on the combative instinct of a cow, you should think that the origin started with introduction of the cow for farming.

Kazuizawa Resorts Marathon

Kazuizawa Resorts Marathon

October 24-25, 2015 | Karuizawa, Nagano
Karuizawa is an upmarket mountain resort at the foot of the active volcano Mount Asama in Nagano Prefecture. It was first "discovered" and promoted as a mountain resort by Western residents of Japan in the late 1800s.
Nowadays, many wealthy urbanites own a second home in Karuizawa. Located at an altitude of roughly 1000 meters, the mountain resort provides a pleasant escape from the summer heat. Thanks to the Nagano Shinkansen (opened in 1998), it now takes little more than an hour to reach Karuizawa from central Tokyo.
Various outdoor activities, such as tennis, hiking, cycling, golfing in summer and skiing and skating in winter can be enjoyed in Karuizawa, and there are ample of shopping opportunities. Karuizawa is located along Japan's Romantic Road.
