Tokyo Art Meeting Ⅵ [TOKYO] - Sensing the Cultural Magma of the Metropolis, MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART TOKYO

Tokyo Art Meeting Ⅵ [TOKYO] - Sensing the Cultural Magma of the Metropolis, MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART TOKYO

7th November 2015 - 14th February, 2016 | MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART TOKYO
What kind of image does Tokyo present as a cultural center as it prepares to hold the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020? Externally, its digitalized, commercialized culture is difficult to grasp, resembling a flat wasteland; a refined, yet cold glacier.

Tokyo first began to attract global attention during the 1980s when its creativity blossomed to give birth to a unique culture.
Having passed through earthquake disasters and economic recessions, a platform upon which to seek ways to create the next culture is finally coming together.

Osaka Hikari-Renaissance, an illuminated walk along event

Osaka Hikari-Renaissance, an illuminated walk along event

29th November, 2015 - 17th January 2016 | Nakanoshima & Midousuji Area, Osaka

Once again, this year Osaka will be presenting a sparkling winter.
"Osaka Hikari-Renaissance" first opened in Nakanoshima, a symbol of the port city of Osaka. The winter night illumination has since become known as a distinguishing feature of the season in Osaka, and is now approaching its 10th year.
Last year it was visited by 3,290,000 people, who came to see the heart-warming lights softly twinkling along the river and the city.
Last year also marked the third year of the lights decorating Osaka’s main street, known as "Midosuji Illumination," stretching 1.9 km, the longest illumination display in Japan. The likes of this scenery cannot be found anywhere else in the world, and many people are attracted to come see the beautiful city of lights.
Starting this year, the two displays will be combined, and with the common goal of broadcasting Osaka’s good cheer through the lights in the Nakanoshima and Midosuji areas, we are spreading the word throughout the country and abroad.
Come experience the bustling activity of Osaka for yourself, and let it enchant you with another expression at night, when it transforms into a city of water and lights.

It is a romantic and historical island where Itsukushima Shrine, a World Heritage site, is located, along with the Virgin Forest of Mt. Misen, and numerous preserved shrines, temples and historical monuments.
Various events and ritual festivals held around Itsukushima Shrine, and in many other places on the island, help us to fully appreciate the changing seasons, the graceful Heian culture, and the heroic Muromachi culture of ancient Japan.   (*reference: Miyajima Official Tourism Website)

Living Locally Reconsidering Critical Regionalism, at Arts Maebashi, Gunma Pref.

9th October 2015 - 12th January, 2016 | Arts Maebashi, Gunma Pref.
Contemporary Japan is at a turning point, as many people begin giving importance to values quite different to those of material/economic abundance and reconsidering the meaning of local communities.
Coexistence with the environment,”degrowth economics,” the progressive aging of society, and changing ideas about family, all widely seen as pressing challenges, seem to be having a substantial impact on the lifestyle of individuals. In his 1983 essay “Towards a Critical Regionalism,” the architect and critic Kenneth Frampton proposed that spatial design reflect the history/culture/natural environment of a locality.
Some 30 years later, we once again find ourselves reflecting deeply on social change, and through architectural design and art rethinking those connections to our localities that we feel in our everyday lives.
