Oshiroi Matsuri (Face Paint Festival) | December, Asakura-shi, Fukuoka

Oshiroi Matsuri (Face Paint Festival) | December, Asakura-shi, Fukuoka

2nd December, 2016 | Asakura-shi, Fukuoka
On the day of the Oshiroi Matsuri (Face Paint Festival), newly harvested rice is ground into powder and made into white face paint, which is then smeared on the faces of worshippers in an attempt to foretell whether they will have a bountiful or lean harvest.

These worshippers are not allowed to wash nor wipe the paint off their faces until they get home, and it is said that if they feed their livestock food with the face paint mixed into it, the animals will never get sick.

It is also said that if worshippers participate in the festival every year, their skin will become smooth and they will have a long life! With a relaxed mood amid its silliness, the Oshiroi Matsuri is one of the more unique festivals throughout the whole of Japan.

Osaka Hikari-Renaissance, an illuminated walk along event

Osaka Hikari-Renaissance, an illuminated walk along event

20th November, 2016 - 9th January 2017 | Nakanoshima & Midousuji Area, Osaka
Once again, this year Osaka will be presenting a sparkling winter.
"Osaka Hikari-Renaissance" first opened in Nakanoshima, a symbol of the port city of Osaka.
The winter night illumination has since become known as a distinguishing feature of the season in Osaka, and is now approaching its 10th year.
Last year it was visited by 3,290,000 people, who came to see the heart-warming lights softly twinkling along the river and the city.
Last year also marked the third year of the lights decorating Osaka’s main street, known as "Midosuji Illumination," stretching 1.9 km, the longest illumination display in Japan.
The likes of this scenery cannot be found anywhere else in the world, and many people are attracted to come see the beautiful city of lights.
Starting this year, the two displays will be combined, and with the common goal of broadcasting Osaka’s good cheer through the lights in the Nakanoshima and Midosuji areas, we are spreading the word throughout the country and abroad.
Come experience the bustling activity of Osaka for yourself, and let it enchant you with another expression at night, when it transforms into a city of water and lights.

Seven Daring Years: Odano Naotake and Akita Ranga, at SUNTORY Museum of Art, Akasaka, Minatoku, Tokyo

16th November 2016 - 9th January, 2017 | SUNTORY Museum of Art, Akasaka, Minatoku, Tokyo
In the mid-Edo period, Odano Naotake (1749-1780), a samurai from Akita, was the central figure in the emergence of a new style of painting, now known as Akita Ranga (Akita Dutch-style painting).
Naotake, who moved to Edo after Hiraga Gennai visited Akita, drew the illustrations for the Kaitai shinsho (New book of anatomy, based on a Dutch translation of German anatomist J.A.Kulmus’s Anatomische Tabellen), the first Western medical textbook to be translated into Japanese.
In a short period, until his death at the age of 32, Naotake created Akita Ranga that incorporated the techniques of linear perspective and shading from Western art.
Akita Ranga paintings, connecting the aesthetics of East and West, continue to fascinate.
This exhibition brings together masterworks by Naotake as well as Akita daimyo Satake Shozan and others associated with the Akita Ranga school to examine the true face of the enigmatic Akita Ranga.

Miyajima Island, one of the most scenic spots in Japan, has long been regarded as an Island of Gods on the beautiful Seto Inland Sea.

It is a romantic and historical island where Itsukushima Shrine, a World Heritage site, is located, along with the Virgin Forest of Mt. Misen, and numerous preserved shrines, temples and historical monuments.

Various events and ritual festivals held around Itsukushima Shrine, and in many other places on the island, help us to fully appreciate the changing seasons, the graceful Heian culture, and the heroic Muromachi culture of ancient Japan.   (*reference: Miyajima Official Tourism Website)
