8th April - 9th July, 2017 | 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Ishikawa
Artist IKEDA Manabu (1973–) depicts a monumental world using a super-fine pen point.

Working slowly—he can complete only a fist-sized area in a single day— Ikeda manifests a surreal alien world, employing minute delineation and a flair for grand composition.

His massive pictures have won him acclaim around the globe.

This will be the first large-scale exhibition presenting the entire scope of Ikeda’s production.

His Rebirth, a new work he spent three years creating during an artist residency at Chazen Museum of Art in Wisconsin USA, is a must see.

MAKI-E: A Kaleidoscope of the Japanese Aesthetic — Discovering by Monocle the Beauty Underlying the Beauty of Lacquer Art — at Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, Hachiouji, Tokyo

1st April - 2nd July, 2017 | Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, Hachiouji, Tokyo
Organized to commemorate the centennial of Hachioji’s municipality, this exhibition presents to the viewing public for the very first time 100 out of some 500 works of maki-e art—lacquerware decorated with designs using gold or silver powder—the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum has collected in recent years.

Recognized worldwide for its distinctly Japanese artisanry, the intricate, kaleidoscopic aesthetic of maki-e can be appreciated at an even deeper level by using the art afficionado’s monocle.

Use of this tool provides viewers of all ages, be they children or adults, with a unique new viewing experience, enabling them to delve into an exquisitely crafted world of gold lacquer and mother-of-pearl work veiled to the naked eye.

This is Japanese art and craftsmanship at its finest, and we are delighted to share this opportunity with every museum-goer, casual or serious.
