Jigen-e (Gold Dragon Festival) at Asakusa-Kannon, Taito, Tokyo

18th March, 2017 | at Asakusa-Kannon, Taito, Tokyo
On March 18 in the year 628 (the 36th year of the reign of Empress Suiko), two fishermen brothers who were catching fish at the Sumida River found a small Buddhist statue.

They gave it to Haji no Nakatomo, who realized it was a statue of the bodhisattva Kannon.
He enshrined this statue on a Japanese pagoda tree stump, entered the priesthood, turned his home into a temple, and became deeply religious.

This manifestation of the bodhisattva Kannon was the beginning of Sensoji Temple, which is celebrated by the Asakusa Kannon Jigen-e ritual.
Sensoji Temple originated from the honorific name "Kinryuzan" (Golden Dragon Mountain).

Here and there in Kiyosumi-shirakawa--colorful MOT events of all kinds!
Over 20 years have passed since Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) first opened.

In that time, the Kiyosumi-shirakawa area has rapidly changed, and MOT has grown with its changes. Currently, the area is drawing interest with its blend of history dating from the Edo period (1603-1868), nostalgic old townscapes, and new cultural spaces abuzz with creativity. "MOT Satellite" is a project of uncovering Kiyosumi-shirakawa's true charm.

The museum, taking advantage of its temporary closure, is going outside to engage with people, places, and history together with artists and local residents and shops.

During the project period, artwork exhibits, workshop, and other events will be held in the district.

N. S. Harsha was born in 1969 in southern India's ancient capital Mysuru, where he continues to reside and pursue his artistic practice.

India's fast-paced economic development and urbanization in recent years has also raised the international profile of its contemporary art, and over the past decade N. S. Harsha has presented his work at numerous international exhibitions. Simultaneously, he has carved out his own highly idiosyncratic place in the world by engaging frankly with the diversity of “life” around him, from the traditional culture and natural environment of southern India, to the everyday relationships between people, flora and fauna.

Light Up on Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto

Light Up on Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto

3rd - 12th March, and 25th March - 9th April, 2017 | at Kiyomizu Temple, Kyoto
Kiyomizudera (清水寺, literally "Pure Water Temple") is one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. It was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto, and derives its name from the fall's pure waters.

The temple was originally associated with the Hosso sect, one of the oldest schools within Japanese Buddhism, but formed its own Kita Hosso sect in 1965. In 1994, the temple was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.

Kiyomizudera is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall, 13 meters above the hillside below. The stage affords visitors a nice view of the numerous cherry and maple trees below that erupt in a sea of color in spring and fall, as well as of the city of Kyoto in the distance.

The main hall, which together with the stage was built without the use of nails, houses the temple's primary object of worship, a small statue of the eleven faced, thousand armed Kannon.
